The beneficial effects of the waters of San Giuliano Terme were already known in Etruscan and Roman times, when the first structures were built to exploit the hot springs. In its present form the elegant spa building is the result of a recent renovation that has brought the complex to the splendor of the eighteenth century when, the summer residence of Grand Duke Francis Stephen of Lorraine, was one of the mundane reference to the nobility throughout Europe.
